Etsy VAT for UK sellers: VAT on fees and on digital downloads

Last checked 8 Oct 2026. Items marked date-sensitive can change; follow the source links before relying on them.

Plain-English answers to the two Etsy VAT questions UK sellers ask most: why Etsy adds VAT to your fees, and why a UK buyer pays more than your digital listing price. Each answer is quoted from Etsy's and GOV.UK's own pages.

See the effect on one sale: the Etsy UK fee calculator has "VAT-registered" and "UK buyer (digital)" switches.

Two different VAT charges get mixed up on Etsy:

  1. VAT Etsy charges you on its seller fees. This depends on whether you've given Etsy a VAT ID.
  2. VAT buyers pay on what they buy. For digital downloads, Etsy adds this and pays it to the tax authority itself.

1. VAT on Etsy's seller fees date-sensitive

If you're not VAT-registered, that VAT is simply a cost to you. If you are registered, how you treat Etsy's fees on your VAT return is a question for your accountant or HMRC's guidance. I'm not giving tax advice here.

2. VAT on digital downloads date-sensitive

Worked example: £10 digital download, UK buyer

No VAT ID on EtsyVAT ID on Etsy
Buyer pays (Etsy adds 20% VAT)£12.00£12.00
Etsy fees before VAT (listing £0.15, transaction £0.65, processing £0.60, regulatory £0.05)£1.45£1.45
VAT on fees (20%)£0.29£0.00
You receive£8.26£8.55

Processing here is charged on the £10 price. If Etsy charges it on the VAT-inclusive £12, processing becomes £0.68 and you receive £8.17 with no VAT ID. Etsy's wording doesn't settle which one applies (see the fees guide).

Do you need to register for VAT? date-sensitive

GOV.UK: you must register if your total taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000, or you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. Below that, registering is voluntary (GOV.UK: When to register for VAT).

Not covered here: whether digital sales where Etsy has already collected the VAT count towards your own taxable turnover, and VAT on physical goods. Those depend on your circumstances, so check HMRC's guidance or ask an accountant.

FAQ

Does Etsy charge VAT on seller fees in the UK?

Yes, unless you've added a VAT ID to your Etsy account. Without one, Etsy adds VAT (20%) to its seller fees and sends a monthly invoice on the 1st. With a VAT ID, it doesn't charge VAT on fees.

Do I add VAT to my digital download price on Etsy?

No. Etsy's help page says sellers aren't responsible for adding VAT to digital listing prices. Etsy adds VAT at checkout for buyers in the UK and the other listed countries, and pays it to the tax authorities.

Why did my UK buyer pay £12 for my £10 download?

Etsy added 20% UK VAT because it was a digital item delivered by automatic download. That £2 goes to the tax authority, not to you.

Where do I find my Etsy VAT invoice?

On a computer, open your Payment account and select the month. The invoice download link appears above that month's activity breakdown.

What is the UK VAT registration threshold?

£90,000 of taxable turnover in the last 12 months, or expected in the next 30 days alone, according to GOV.UK on 8 Oct 2026.

Can I avoid paying VAT on Etsy fees?

Only by being VAT-registered and adding your VAT ID to Etsy. Registering has wider effects, such as charging VAT on your own sales, so it's a decision to take with an accountant, not just to save VAT on fees.
